PS3 and external hard drives

Barely 10 hours after finishing Heavy Rain this past weekend my PS3′s network adapter decided to die. I quickly ruled out the cable and the switch and in fact, a peek behind showed no lights on the ethernet port. I made a call to PS3 support here in Australia, wondering if it’ll be difficult as it could be when calling tech support, but the whole process turned out to be simple, painless, and quick. They apparently even have a deal with Australia Post so that all I need is to bring the PS3 unit into a post office and they’ll pack it up and ship it over to Blacktown.

Trying to back-up my PS3, however, proved more difficult. After reformatting my girlfriend’s 37GB external hard drive into a 32GB FAT32 drive the PS3 was still not detecting the drive and it kept spinning up and down, and up and down. Out of frustration I grabbed the USB hub that came with my Rock Band kit, connected my the HDD to it and then connected it to the PS3. Strangely enough, it is now working and the system is backing-up itself as I write this. As an IT person, this was rather counter-intuitive as usually we’d see issues when there’s a “middleman” between two devices, and yet this time the middleman solved the issue.

At any rate, I hope I get the unit back soon as I’ve got Lego Rock Band, Beatles Rock Band and Buzz Quiz World coming soon!
