My friend at Tetsuya’s

I mentioned that I went to Tetsuya’s this past weekend, but what I omitted was the little friend I made during the oyster entree that we ordered on top of the tasting menu.

We all took a piece, slurped it and set the empty shell on our respective plates. The alcohol got to me early this night so I was a tad buzzed, and as we were chatting and savoring the first piece I looked down on my plate and noticed something wriggling just outside the shell I had set down.

I stared at it for a moment before I interrupted everyone at the table. “Hey guys, is this … supposed to be moving still?”

Everyone at the table broke out in laughter and we called the waiter who promptly removed it and apologized. “Well, at least you know it’s fresh!” was what my table said. Hell, even the waiter as well. We just laughed it off and let it go. Come Monday afternoon I finally realized why we had an extra “special” course added in the middle of our 10 course tasting menu.

Anyhow, I managed to snap a picture of my friend before it was efficiently whisked away by the waiter.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to bad-mouth Tetsuya’s here. I had a good time and in fact I’m wanting to go back there for a second time to make a proper call on the restaurant. I do have a bias against fine-dining in Sydney and I don’t know if it’s that or if maybe I just wasn’t too impressed by the food when compared against the hype. I told the story to quite a few people and some were put off but honestly, for some reason it didn’t do a thing to me. If the worm had been on the oyster itself then that would’ve been another story.
